Changing Your Relationship To Money

The holiday season provides the perfect opportunity to energetically expand yourself by shifting your sense of abundance and expanding your perception and vision of financial ability. The holidays are often referred to as the “Season of Giving” and we’ve all heard that it is better to give than to receive.  These ideas take on added meaning when you think about the expanding effects that giving has on your energy.

When we give we are encouraging the flow of energy through us through action.  It can be seen as part of ones personal responsibility in tending the flow of abundance and energy in ones life. Giving money to credit card creditors or paying our bills can be the kind of giving which perpetuates the perception that our relationship to money is more of a life-maintenance relationship in essence it comes from a desire to survive.  Making a monetary donation or an energetic contribution to an organization however begins to turn your perception of your relationship with money into more of a dream relationship.  It comes from a sense of abundance; instead of coming from a place of simply surviving it comes from a place of thriving. When we engage through action in this arena of our life, we are opening our mind to the idea of increasing Prosperity in our life and in the world around us. This season will provide you ample opportunity to start giving.

There will be the Salvation Army kettle, the charity fund-raising campaign at work, the membership drive of your local public radio or television station. Some suggestions on how to make your giving a way to let your deepest values find expression in your life would be to give to or support the places where you receive spiritual help or inspiration. That may be a church or a nature preserve or other humanitarian or community program or service.  If you or someone you know has been affected by a particular illness consider contributing to the search for a cure to that illness, it will surely be an act with much meaning and heart-felt intention.

If giving money is hard for you it may help to start with giving things. Give food to the local soup kitchen, or give blankets to the animal shelter. Volunteer at your local school or library or environmental center. Give the support of your time or energy in your given field or skill set to individuals or organizations aligned with your intentions or ethics.

Well known financial adviser Suze Orman suggests giving an amount that feels respectful to us. Once you get comfortable with a certain amount and see or feel the positive impact giving has on your life, you may wish to increase the amount.

And remember that anything counts, anything helps.  The power to shift your vision and expand your energy isn’t in the dollar amount you give, but in the frequency and consistency of your contribution.  There is of course the immediate gratification from saying yes, but the frequency of your giving, of your flowing energy through you will become a reminder of your power to make a positive difference in your own life and in the lives of others.
