Poem of the Day: “the smile behind the eyes might be he”

the smile behind the eyes might be he
(for the unknown man in the photo from India
at Twin Springs Hermitage)

something in the eyes of the man from India
inspires me to smile a human greeting

knowing he is not the ragged robe
or rib-bones,
not the single stone on a simple cord
around his neck,
not the mud hovel, his shelter, his home
in the background

but sentient kin, a fellow man
spirit, incarnate

NOTE: The title of this poem is taken from a line in Stanley Kunitz poem,  “touch me”.
